Racing

New race lengths: 30 seconds and 90 seconds. 90 seconds is now the default
Random names now match the theme you pick, like Sir Quacksalot, Captain Quack, or Toadstool
Race track shows distance markers and numbered lanes, and the timer shows a progress bar
Each theme now has its own original song: Battle Quack for Medieval Battle, Bath Quack for Bath Time Adventure, Sea Quack for Ocean Adventure, and Forest Quack for Forest Adventure. Written by Gretchen Grajales, sung by AI with Suno
Duck quacks and music keep playing for the full length of longer races

Obstacles and crashes

About one obstacle for every three racers, popping up at random moments during the race
Every obstacle appears at least a second before a duck reaches it, so you can see trouble coming
Every theme mixes obstacles that pop up in a duck's path with ones that float in from the right: boulders and logs in Medieval Battle, soap, sponges, and giant bubbles in Bath Time Adventure, rocks and driftwood in Ocean Adventure, and mossy rocks and logs in Forest Adventure
Rocks, boulders, and soap stop a duck for a moment in a puff of smoke; floating logs, sponges, and bubbles slow it down, and bubbles pop
Logs come in different sizes, and bigger logs slow ducks down more
Ducks near the front are more likely to be hit, so the lead keeps changing
Some crashed ducks shake it off and get a burst of speed, sometimes enough to win
Obstacles sink away after they are hit instead of staying on the track

Look and feel

Brand-new look: bold cartoon style to match the ducks, a dark background, and easier-to-read text
Themes redesigned around their names: castle walls and a moat for Medieval Battle, rolling waves for Ocean Adventure, and a river with lily pads for Forest Adventure
New Bath Time Adventure theme with tiles, bubbles, and bathtub water (replaces Neon Cyberpunk)
Ducks now swim: they bob on the water, paddle, splash, and leave little waves and bubbles behind them
The water flows past the ducks while they race, with new, non-repeating waves every race
The winner card now always appears in the middle of the screen
Animations turn off for visitors who have reduced motion set on their device

Fixes and site

Names with symbols like < or & now display correctly, and longer names fit on their tags
If a duck picture fails to load, a backup duck now appears instead
The visit counter always shows the latest total

Earlier

Race timer: race runs for the selected duration
All sounds start at “GO!” (countdown, go, duck quacks, dramatic music)
Sounds stop when the race is paused or when a winner is chosen
Restart Race button — appears when the race is paused
Mobile: duck names hidden to reduce crowding; desktop always shows names
Audio: dramatic race music, duck quacks per timer duration, cheers, winner celebration

About Duck Race

Duck Race is an interactive web application created through AI-assisted development. This project demonstrates the collaborative process between human creativity and AI coding assistants. This web app is intended as a fun way to pick names; in no way do we condone the use of this app for anything malicious. We support peace and equality for all.

Human Contribution

As the creator, I Gretchen Grajales contributed:

AI-Assisted Development

This web app was created using Cursor and Claude AI coding assistants. The AI helped with:

Code implementation and structure
HTML, CSS, and JavaScript development
Feature implementation based on specifications
Bug fixes and optimizations

Art Assets

Duck images and water background created using Adobe Firefly. Please note: DuckRace.net is an evolving project committed to ongoing development and refinement. Current AI-generated imagery serves as placeholder content and will be systematically replaced with original human-created artwork as we continue to enhance the experience.
